Masimagam Festival is observed on Full moon day of the 'Magam' asterism in the Tamil month of Masi (Feb-March). Masi Magam Festival is that festival during which the spiritual self of the people reach its height as eminent in its festivity.
There is a unique way followed in the celebration of Masimagam Festival. To observe this festival, several statues of deities are brought from the temples in and around Pondicherry to the beach. On beach these statues are taken for sanctimonious sea bath.
As various deities are brought from numerous temples for celebrating Masimagam Festival, So you can find a big procession to the sea shore with the accompaniment of Nadhaswaram, images of Chakra (discus, the symbol of Vishnu) and the trisul (trident the symbol of Siva) near Kuruchikuppam in Pondicherry municipal area.
Masimagam Festival is a day-long celebration. From early morning to late night of the day, people remain busy in festivity. However, the celebration meets an end with the returning procession whereby deities who were carried to the sea shore for sanctimonious bath are taken back to their respective places in the evening.
