Machattu Mamangam, also known as Machattuvela, is a five-day annual festival at the Machattu Thiruvanikavu Temple near Wadakanchery in Thrissur District. It is one of the most famous festivals celebrated here and the temple deity is Kavilamma.
The Mamangam is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February - March). Hundreds of devotees stay awake throughout the night to welcome Kavilamma. People believe that this goddess is responsible for all the prosperity in their lives. The main highlight of the festival is the Kuthiravela, where richly decorated motifs of horses are brought ceremoniously to the temple by devotees. Other cultural and art forms are also conducted which includes Chendamelam and elephant pageants.
Time for celebrating the Machattu Mamangam Festival
The annual event is scheduled for third week of the month of February and it continues for five days with various celebrations. The time for the occasion is a great time to visit the state filled with the serenity of nature. The event was scheduled for the date of February 21, 2006.
