Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple Festival

Introduction to the Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple Bharani Maholsavam:

The Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple is one of the renowned temples of Kerala. The principle deity of the Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple is Goddess Bhagavathy who is also known as Kurumba Bhagavathy. The other Gods and Goddesses at the temple are the Iliya Bhagavathy, Dhandan, Ghandakarnam, Vishnu Moorthy and Gulikan.

Apart from these chief Gods and Goddesses there are sub deities who are also enshrined in the Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple. They consist of Moovalamkuuhi Chamundi and Padinhatta Chamundi. The famous festival of the Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple is Bharani Maholsavam. This festival is usually held in March. Another festival known as Maruputhari Festival is held in the Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple during December-January. Few other festivals like Kalam Kanippu Maholsavam and Poorolsavam are also held at this temple.

Description of the Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple Bharani Maholsavam:

Of the numerous festivals that are held in Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple the Bharani Maholsavam festival is the most important. It starts on the next day after the commencement of the Arattu Festival at Trikkanad Temple. This is because Trikkanad temple is located just a few kilometers from the Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple.

It is another renowned place of worship of the Thiyya Dynasty. A single rope is used by both the temples for the purpose of Dwajarohanam. The Bharani Festival culminates in Auirathiri Utsavam. The area where these temples are situated falls under the authority of the Udma Panchayat and Chemnath Panchayat. They provide plenty of offerings to the Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple.

These offerings are carried with great joy and enthusiasm in a procession. These donations consist of expensive jewelry and cash money also. Therefore the Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple is one of the richest temples at Kerala.

During the festival people wear colorful dresses and celebrate the festive mood is observable from the faces of the young and old alike. A brilliant display of fireworks is another feature of this Festival.
