About Eravikulam National Park :
Eravikulam National Park is located in the Nilgiri Hills. The main area is Nilgiri Tahr. The place is the home ground for various animals those who are kept in their respective ambience. The sanctuary stretches an area of 97sq kms with wonderful floras and faunas. Kerala is the store house of various herbs and this place is not exceptional one. The sanctuary and its fresh surroundings with enriched animal life make an ideal family holiday destination.During the British Raj, the North Travancore Land Planting Society owned the region of Rajamalai and Eravikulam, but they later handed over the area to the Kannan Deven Hill Produce Corporation. The Corporation turned the region into a private hunting area, as it was found unsuitable of tea plantation. The region of Rajamalai was declared a wildlife sanctuary way back in 1936, but the present sanctuary was established only in 1975. In 1978, the status of the sanctuary was upgraded to the level of a national park.Anamudi (2,695 m) is the highest peak in south India and located within the park area.
This is a good place for trekking.Being situated in the most southern state of India, Kerala, the national park experiences a typical climate of the state. The park is a prominent part of Idukki district and is very close to Munnar. The sanctuary is dominated by Southwestern monsoon. So it is not advisable to visit the park during the monsoon time as the area takes a dangerous shape in the monsoon. So from the month of January to early days of March are ideal for visiting the forest. There are wide ranges of wild beasts like Tahrs, Atlas Moth, Elephants, Sambhars, Gaurs, Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Tigers and Leopards. Apart from the animals, the place remains crowded by varieties of birds especially in the winters when migratory birds come and make their nest in the trees of the park and fill the area with effervescence and vivacity. You can also visit the highest peak of South India i.e. Anamudi.
