True to its name, Chamatkar (miracle) Temple in Sawai Madhopur speaks of a number of intriguing miracles that have been associated with its formation. History suggests that the land where the Chamatkar Temple today stands belonged to a farmer several years ago who made his living by ploughing the fields. On one of those normal days, as he carried about with his work, something unusual happened. While tilling, his plough got stuck at a particular place and did not budge despite repeated efforts by the farmer.
As the legend goes, that very night, God appeared in his dreams and asked him to dig up the same place the next morning adding that the farmer would find God there. The following day, curious as he was, the farmer went to his fields early and started digging the area where his plough had been stuck the previous day. He was stunned to find God's idol there. However, a dispute soon erupted between the three major communities of Sawai Madhopur in those times - the Hindu Vaishnavas and the Jain Svetambaras and Digambaras - regarding the possession of the idol. After much outcry, the Jain Digambaras were handed over the possession of the idol.
However, the legend does not end here. The Digambaras were now concerned about choosing a suitable place for the construction of the temple. It is believed that God reappeared in the dreams of the same farmer one night and asked him to place the idol in a chariot and leave for the pursuit of land and the point where the chariot refuses to move ahead should be chosen for the construction of the temple. The farmer heeded to God's advice and it is said that the chariot stopped at the same place in Sawai Madhopur where the Chamatkar Temple today stands. The temple was named so in keeping with the numerous miracles attached to it and the idol of Lord Adinath was placed here. One can also see a number of striking idols of Jain Tirthankaras (24 gurus of Jains) at the Chamatkar Temple in Sawai Madhopur. It is strongly believed by the thousands of Jain pilgrims who come here unfailingly every year that all their wishes are positively fulfilled here.
