Historical Monuments In Kanyakumari

The Historical Monuments in Kanyakumari exhibit a rich blend of ethnic and modern architectural style. They are the heritage properties of India and are eloquently bedecked with intricate carvings. Kanyakumari lies in the Southern tip of India and is the point of confluence of the two great seas; Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal with the grand Indian Ocean.

People visit to Kanyakumari and spend a nice time at the Historical Monuments in Kanyakumari. Kanyakumari was known as Cape Camorin during the British rule. There is a legend behind naming of this region. According to the Mythology, Lord Vishnu selected Goddess Parashakthi in order to get rid of the harmful demon Banasura.

Lord Shiva was captivated by the striking beauty of the Goddess and decided to marry her. Then sage Narada thought that if Shiva marries Parashakthi then she would not be able to defeat Banasura. This was due to the fact that Banasura got the blessings from Lord that nobody on earth except a virgin girl would be able to slain him.

So, while Lord Shiva was on his way to Kanyakumari for marrying Parashakthi, Narada in the guise of a cock, cried aloud. Shiva thought that it was already dawn and the auspicious hour has abated. So, he returned and the marriage never took place. Late on the Goddess beheaded the demon and never got married.

Kanya in Hindi language means virgin and Kumari means exquisite beauty. Together they signify the sad plight of the Goddess Parashakthi. The name Kanyakumari has been derived from the Kanyakumari Temple, a splendid Historical Monument in the hub of the city that lures the tourists from ages back.

The Cholas, Pandyas, Rashtrakutas were the rulers of this region and they left their footmarks in every nook and corner of the city.

The main Historical Monuments in Kanyakumari are the following:

Padmanabhapuram Palace: Built in Travancore Architectural Style the Padmanabhapuram Palace is renowned for the 17th and 18th century frescoes, hidden underground passages and inner courtyards. Wonderful images of Lord Krishna adorn the wall of the Palace. It is a worthwhile place to have a visit.

Gandhi Memorial: The Gandhi Memorial is a home to a colossal Library and a vast auditorium where meetings and lectures are a common phenomenon. The life and activities of Mahatma Gandhi along with the spiritual assets of India are all preserved here with care and concern.

Vivekananda Memorial: Located in the midway of the eternal confluence of the mighty Indian Ocean and the two seas, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, Vivekananda Memorial is an absolute wonder. Dedicated to Swami Vivekananda this Memorial is located in a rock where the great philosopher is said to have meditated for a while during his sojourn to Kanyakumari.
