About the Churches In Tamil Nadu :
Tamil Nadu is one of those places, which saw the emergence of Christian religion in India. It is believed that St Thomas, the apostle of Jesus Christ came to Madras (now Chennai) around 52 AD. He was killed in the year 78 AD and a church was later built on the San Thome beach. Later on, with the coming of the Europeans in India, Christianity spread not only to Tamil Nadu but also to other parts. As the Christians settled in Tamil Nadu their place of worship (Churches) also started dotting the religious landscape of the state. Have a look at some important Churches of Tamilnadu.
Some Churches In Tamil Nadu :
St. Mary's Church: this is the oldest English church in Chennai. In this church the remainders of Robert Clive and Elihu Yale the early governor of Chennai are placed.
Luz Church: this church was set up by the Portuguese sailors. It is counted in the oldest churches of Chennai.
Little Mount Church: this tiny cave is believed to be the abode of St Thomas. It is locally known as Chinnamalai.
St. Andrew's Church: this classical style church boasts of blue dome adorned with gold stars.
Christ the King Church: being designed and built by the Indian mason was brought into concept by the French Clergymen. This beautiful church displays gothic architecture. Pointed arches, ribbed vaults, rose windows, three-aisled nave and flying buttresses; make the presence of this holy church really majestic.
Velankanni Church: this church was built in order to pay tribute to the miraculous curative powers of the Madonna of Velankanni.
St. George's Cathedral: built in 1815 this church has tall spire and lonic columns. The main focus of this holy cathedral is the graveyard featuring war emblems such as muskets, bayonets and others.
C.S.I. Holy Cross Church: popularly known as Perambur Railway Church, this church was under the railway authorities. At this church Anglo-Indian and families of southern states assemble in great majority.
San Thome Cathedral Basilica: San Thome has received its name from St. Thomas. St. Thomas was an apostle of Christ. He was killed on St. Thomas Mount and was detained in San Thome beach. At this beach this church was built. However, this church was rebuilt as cathedral and was made a basilica.
St John's Church: this church was built in 1812. It is located near Theppakulam.
