About Devarajaswami Temple Kancheepuram :
Devarajaswami Temple, Kancheepuram is a magnificent temple built by the Vijaynagar kings. The temple is dedicated to one of the chief Gods of Hindu religion, Lord Vishnu. Devarajaswami Temple, Kancheepuram is located on the eastern end of Kancheepuram, nearly 76 km from Chennai. It is popularly believed that after creating the Universe Brahma wanted Lord Vishnu to reside on the Earth. So He performed the Aswamedha Yagam and when the Yagam was about to end, Lord Varadaraja and His Consorts, Sridevi and Bhudevi emerged from the flames of the Yagam. Lord Brahma requested the Lord to come on Earth and bless devotees. The Lord agreed and thus stayed behind in Hasthagiri.The architecture of Devarajaswami Temple, Kancheepuram is exquisite with elaborately carved pillars. There’s a marriage hall, in honor of the celestial wedding of Lord Vishnu and Godess Laxmi. Another striking thing about the temple is that there’s a massive chain engraved out from a single piece of stone. Within the premises of the temple there is a large tank of water, in which a 10-meter high, statue of Lord Vishnu is immersed. To view the idol of Lord Vishnu, the water of the tank is drained at the gap of every forty years. Before immersing into the water, the idol is established for darshan for 48 days.
